I only have Jane to blame. Or Beth for introducing me to Jane who introduced me to Houzz.com.

Jane and I met for coffee a couple of weeks ago and we instantly bonded over a few things we had in common: the PR business, relocating to Rochester, and our love of HGTV (especially Curb Appeal host John Gidding)

When Jane told me about Houzz.com I wondered how this website had not yet been a part of my regular diet of home decor porn. When you scroll through photos on Houzz, you can add the ones you like to your idea book. Be forewarned, though. If you like looking at photos of tastefully decorated rooms, you will find yourself losing precious hours of your day here.

My next home decor project is my home office/living room which is simply not functional. I finally got a real office chair (albeit an ugly one it is comfortable) and now I need to rid this room of the antique desk. It may be a family heirloom, but it was made for writing handwritten letters, not holding a computer monitor, keyboard, mouse and printer.

For the last month it didn’t really matter much. I was working with my laptop on the couch. But after surgery, I want to have my home office ready for business.

Something like this would suit me just fine (note there’s no ugly office chair here). Or maybe this…

Or this…

A girl can dream.

    Erin…
at the risk of sounding like the old granny that I can sometimes be. Smart, successful women not only wear sensible shoes but they also have sensible (ergonomic/ugly) office chairs!! Eek. ;-) Rachele

OK Erin I have to confess I have now spent over one hour on Houzz.com. I too am looking for a home office makeover. The only thing I notice about so many pictures of home offices on the internet is mine never looks anything like the photos. Where are the large monitors, cords, printers, computer keyboard trays, and piles of paper? I find it very hard to work 8 plus hours a day using a laptop keyboard and small monitor.

BTW the purchase of my ugly office chair was one of the best investments I have made. I think there might be a business opportunity there for someone who designs cool looking but cozy chairs for women working from home. I cannot wait to see your home office creation! All the best.

  3. @Kate, I agree! Someone has got to be designing comfortable and pretty office chairs for women. If that company is out there, I have yet to find them and believe me, I have looked and looked. I gave up and went with the ugly and practical one from Staples. It is super comfy. I think there are ways to contain the home office chaos–but it requires good cabinetry. I am thinking of having something custom built, like my mudroom. That was—and continues to be—one of the best investments we’ve made.

Oh no…. I have now spent more time on this site than I care to admit. Can’t believe I never heard of it before. My home office currently is the house dumping ground. You know, the door that stays shut when people come over. Maybe these photos will inspire me to work on it today since we have one of our crazy MD snow days.

This is my “a girl can dream” design site, http://www.cotedetexas.blogspot.com/. It does make me sad though when I have to take my eyes off the screen and then look around at the reality, ha ha.

I browse apartmenttherapy sometimes…but I really love blogs-the unlutterer, centsational girl, house of smiths, i heart organizing, and a thoughtful place are some of my favorite blogs about home organization and decoration.
