It was a classic TV struggle for me last night. I couldn’t decide what to watch: Modern Family or the Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond take on Food Network’s Bobby Flay on Throwdown. I decided to watch the cooking contest because 1) now that I have an iPad with the ABC player app I can watch my favorite ABC shows anytime, anywhere (as long as there is reliable wi-fi) and 2) I was dying to see Ree’s ranch in Oklahoma. As a long-time reader of her blog, I have wondered what her kitchen actually looks like. Sure, she has photos on her site, but the entire show was recorded in her kitchen before an audience of cowboys and their families!

Can you imagine doing that in your home? Cooking two turkeys? I don’t think so.

The show was very entertaining. While I was watching I was also following Ree’s tweets which provided her real-time reactions as well as those classic behind-the-scenes moments that landed on the cutting room floor. Watching this program at 9pm, however, did nothing for my waistline. I was so hungry and craving mashed potatoes and turkey so badly that I wish today was Thanksgiving! I ran to the fridge at a commercial break and retrieved a block of cheddar cheese and some kalamata olives, but it just wasn’t what I needed. I am seriously thinking about going to Wegman’s and getting a $6 meal for lunch to satisfy my craving.

Anyhow, I’m not cooking Thanksgiving dinner this year. I’m heading to my sister’s in Massachusetts (yay!). But if I was making the feast, instead of bringing a bakery bought pie and several bottles of wine, I would try breaking from tradition and making Ree’s cornbread stuffing. It looks amazing! You can print the recipe from her site.

What are you looking forward to eating on Thanksgiving?

I’m glad you didn’t spoil it. I’m going to see when it’s on a again & set my DVR! Unfortunately I know all too well about having to eat while watching food network. BUT the good thing is my kids get hungry too and I can get them to eat better, more adventurous things as well! I got them to eat fish tacos w/cabbage slaw for example. Try it w/your boys!
