Yesterday was Anders birthday, and I was looking forward to what I assumed would be a happy day of celebrations and cake as we marked the day of his birth.
I imagined starting the day with homemade chocolate chip pancakes (his request), followed by a day at work and camp; a birthday dinner (cheeseburgers, again, his request) and cake. Then, after putting the kids to bed, I planned to sit with my laptop and a glass of wine, quietly contemplating the past eight years and composing a post for this site that capture the emotion of the moment.
We made it through the chocolate chip pancakes and then the sh*t hit the fan.
Instead of sending the children off with full tummies and smiles on their faces, I practically ran from the house, chased by my now eight year old who was screaming at me because I insisted his thank you notes be both correct and neatly written.
At the end of the day Anders had a break down because his father cut the birthday cake without a) putting candles in it and b) showing the cake to Anders. While the boys yelled at each other, I dragged myself and my pounding head upstairs to hide.
That’s right people – I was in bed by 9 pm. (For a full blow-by-blow, listen to this week’s podcast – I promise there are stories to be told).
So, while it may not have been the “perfect” day I was envisioning – it was most certainly the perfect day.
Happy Birthday Andersman!

Would love to have my almost 8 year old (the 26th of this month) hang with Tommy and Anders. I think they have more in common than anyone realizes! Bedtime by 9….heaven. We’ll be spending my daughter’s bday in the car!
Don’t you wish that could stay that cute and sweet forever? Instead they turn into stinky, sweaty little boys!
Happy birthday to Anders! I’m sorry that you didn’t get the day that you wanted to have with him, but it sounds like you were able to handle the craziness with good humor, though.
