While my husband cleaned the kitchen and washed the dishes following the dinner I had made, I was slumped down in my chair—wine in hand—reading this article in the Sunday New York Times. If you haven’t yet read it (and the corresponding op-ed “My So-Called Wife” which is one of the most e-mailed articles of the day), you must check them out. And let me know what you think!

I just read both of these articles too! Reminded me of families in Africa with men having a few wives. It really seems logical to have a communal type family, though with men and/or women fulfilling “wife” duties. Logically, I would love a few extra wives in my household. The problem is, emotionally I want to fulfill most of the roles and run out of energy trying to do so.

my sister calls her roomba vacuum her wife. we all need one of our own – wives I mean!

Both of these articles really resonate with me. I laughed out loud when I read this line: “In many ways women are their own worst enemies — we want men to do it, but we want to tell them how they should do it.” Unfortunately for me, I epitomize this statement, as I’m sure my husband would attest. :)

In my household, there is a fairly equal balance of work inside the home and we’re fairly equal breadwinners — and I think it has done wonders keeping us happily married. Though my husband often tells me he’d be thrilled to be a stay-at-home dad while I bring home the proverbial bacon…I can tell you that would not make me happy at all. So equals we shall remain.

Great article. Lots of it rings true. I don’t bring home more bacon than my husband but often fantasize I did. My husband and I would watch Big Love together (HBO show about man with 3 wives). I was surprised to find myself thinking “What a brilliant idea!” Now I tell him to get going on finding some more wives to do things around here.
