At this year’s Escape, we allowed guests to select name tags they thought best described them (or, how others perceived them). In my case, I chose “Clueless” and “Whatever.”
This morning I was reminded of these name badges when my phone lit up at 6 am with the message – School Canceled.
Shaking the sleep from my brain, I tried to figure out why school might have been canceled. H1N1 outbreak? Bomb threat? Electrical outage? Snow? Okay, maybe snow made the most sense, except that I had absolutely no idea that it was supposed to snow. Certainly not that it was supposed to snow enough to possibly cancel snow and tangle traffic throughout the region.
Looking out the window, I received confirmation. It had snowed – a lot – and now my family was going to be trapped at home for the day. I had made no plans for snow – bought no groceries (we’re out of juice and milk), thought of no activities and come up with no contingency plans for work. It was snowing and I was feeling – clueless.
But I got up, and got to work, preparing the house for a day full of family – cleaned the kitchen, made some pancakes (which would keep the kids asking for cereal with milk), found all the snow clothing, and discussed the days plans with my husband.
Then I took the car (our AWD wagon) leaving everyone stranded at the house, and headed to work for another day. Am I worried about what they will do today? I can only answer with my other ribbon. . .
Whatever.

That’s classic. And my tag said OCD! To prove my point, it’s 10:30 and we’re about to start our third activity: making paper snowflake chains.
One good thing about being a consultant who works part time from home: no one really freaks when your regular home office day turns into a snow day.
As I was bundling my son out to the car this morning (snow falling rapidly), my son said: “maybe it’s too dangerous to go to school?” “We’re New Englanders, buddy,” I replied. “We’re tough!” I’m not spending another day at home, no way, snow, ice, or sleet!
Here in Southern California it is 46 degrees and we are frrreeeeezing!! LOL
Everyone is at school. Yay!
You are so funny! My husband would have been the one with the “Whatever” name tag on as he was walking out of the door!
I’m a “Whatever” girl, too! Or a “Can’t be bothered” (said with an english accent) girl. LOL!
I’d take snow. We are at 25 and dropping, with a 11 degree windchill and it isn’t even noon! Yesterday, it was all rain, ugh!~
Great post!! I was clueless too. I just can’t bring myself to watch local news and the weather channel is never right (not that I catch that regularly either). I guess I need my weather to show up on Facebook, Twitter, or Google reader and then maybe I’ll have a clue. After a two hour commute dropping my daughter off at school today I was wishing they had cancelled or had a delayed opening. Should be fun slogging back to get her than back again later for the much dreaded and eagerly awaited H1N1 flu clinic.
Love it! Especially that you took off and drove to work!!
We had around 17 inches on snow last night. It was awful. If I add the fact that my husband was supposed to be back from a trip last night and is still not home this afternoon, it makes me frustrated rather than clueless. I just hope that he makes it safely home tonight before the temperatures start dropping below zero.
Ugg stuck at home on bad weather days is too much for me to handle – My kids are nuts if they are stuck inside for more than 1/2 day – Makes me want to drink alot of wine !
I love snow days… My husband is a teacher so it’s a lovely gift to have him home too… Usually! We have been in single digits & below 0 for over a week now though and the kids have had only indoor recess–now that is making me crazy as my boy is in great need of some physical activity!
Hey, I actually love snow days! Usually I stay home from work and Evan & I watch movies, play in the snow & drink hot chocolate. It’s sometimes nice to have a surprise day off!
I’m sure Steve & the kids will figure something to do. Maybe they should go over to Erin’s house. She has the crafts going on.
Enjoy the snow!

I sure didn’t hear that it was supposed to snow yesterday! Luckily it was rain to start in our area so the kids went off to school. We don’t have snow days unless the Governor declares a state of emergency!
We live in Northern California. There was a lot of frost on the ground yesterday and my 5 year old asked me if I thought school might shut down….
I’d choose: Rookie of the year- rookie dad of the year to be more specific.
I’m really excited cuz it started dumping at my house and that translates to skiing at the resorts! In addition I bought a discount lift tickets membership for a ton of resorts!
